A copper foil inductor is wound in layers from flat copper strip. At the same inductance it offers lower DCR than a round-wire coil, and high-frequency skin effect has less influence on it.
You gain most in the bass section, where every tenth of an ohm of series resistance costs bass control. Given its size and price it is usually found in high-end crossovers, where the benefits of an air core are wanted with as little loss as possible.
