In a compression driver the diaphragm radiates into a small chamber and then through a phase plug into the throat of a horn. This design delivers extremely high efficiency and SPL, making it the standard HF and midrange unit for PA, stage monitors and large venues.
It can't be used without a horn: throat size (1 or 1.4 inch) and mounting must match. Never cross it below the minimum frequency the maker specifies, and always protect the diaphragm with a series capacitor.
