The Dayton Audio 10-inch Reference subwoofer kit is built around the Reference series driver rather than the long-throw Ultimax, and the difference in intent is worth understanding before choosing between them. The Reference line is a general-purpose high-fidelity woofer family: lighter cones, more moderate excursion and a balance tuned for accuracy and speed rather than for maximum output at the very bottom of the range.
In practice this makes the Reference ten a good fit for music-first systems and for smaller rooms. It integrates readily with standmount and slim floorstanding speakers, and because it is not asked to move as far for a given output, it stays clean and articulate in the upper bass where kick drum, double bass and the lower registers of piano actually live. A builder chasing the last few hertz of cinema effects would be better served by a long-excursion driver; a builder who wants bass that starts and stops with the rest of the music will find this the more natural choice.
Enclosure work follows the usual rules with one caveat: Reference drivers generally prefer a slightly larger box than the equivalent Ultimax, so do not copy an enclosure designed for a different family. Simulate the alignment from the published Thiele-Small parameters, decide deliberately between a sealed cabinet for gentle roll-off and a vented one for extra output near tuning, and brace the panels.
Finally, take the mechanical work seriously. Seal the driver to the baffle with a gasket, fill or line the cabinet to control standing waves, and keep the port, if fitted, clear of internal damping material.
