The Dayton Audio 15-inch Ultimax subwoofer kit is the largest of the Ultimax subwoofer packages and is intended for rooms and projects where output, not cabinet size, is the priority. A fifteen-inch cone has well over twice the radiating area of a ten, and that single fact drives everything else about the design.
The advantage of area is that it buys output without excursion. Two drivers producing the same sound pressure level at 30 Hz will differ enormously in how far each cone has to travel, and cone travel is where distortion, power compression and suspension stress come from. A fifteen playing at a realistic domestic level is barely working, which is why large drivers so often sound relaxed rather than merely loud. The costs are equally real: a much bigger enclosure, a heavier moving assembly that is less agile above 80 Hz, and a driver that is genuinely difficult to move once the cabinet is built.
Because of that mass, crossover choice matters. A fifteen of this type is happiest handling the bottom two octaves and handing over low, ideally at or below 80 Hz with a steep slope, so that the main speakers carry the upper bass where the larger cone begins to lose composure.
Enclosure design should be simulated from the published Thiele-Small parameters rather than guessed at, and the cabinet must be built accordingly: heavy material, generous internal bracing and a properly gasketed driver mount. At the excursions and pressures a fifteen generates, a flexing panel or a small air leak is not a subtlety, it is an audible defect.
