The Accuton BD30-6-458 is a diamond dome tweeter from the German manufacturer's high-end ceramic and diamond driver range. Diamond is used here for one measurable reason: it has an exceptionally high ratio of stiffness to density, which places the speed of sound in the material far above that of aluminium, beryllium or textile.

That single property determines how the driver behaves. Every dome eventually reaches a frequency at which it stops moving as a rigid body and begins to flex in modes of its own, a phenomenon usually described as break-up. In a soft dome this happens gradually and is damped; in a metal dome it produces a sharp, high-Q resonance that must be filtered or lived with. In a diamond dome the first break-up mode is pushed so far above the audible band that the driver is behaving as a piston across the entire range in which it is asked to work.

The audible consequence is the absence of a particular kind of hardness. The upper octaves carry the harmonic structure of cymbals, strings and voices, and the spatial cues that let a listener place instruments in a recorded acoustic. When a dome resonance sits inside that region, it adds energy that was never in the recording, and the ear reads it as fatigue rather than as detail.

Drivers of this class deserve a crossover designed around measurements of the actual unit in the actual baffle, and a filter slope steep enough to keep low frequency energy out of a light diamond dome. Observe the manufacturer's minimum crossover frequency, and protect the driver with a properly rated series capacitor.
